Dean Guitar: Espana Classical
by Guitar Guru
”Classical Guitar with Style”
If you are looking to learn how to play the classical guitar then the Dean Espana Solid Top Classical Guitar may be exactly what you are looking for.
This beautiful little number has a solid cedar top
and laminate mahogany back and sides that give it a warm, well-rounded tone that will keep beginning classical guitarists coming back for more. While not as full and rich as a solid wood guitar, the Espana is a very pretty piece and is very good as an entry level classical guitar.
Guitar reviews vary as to the quality of the Espana, and while it doesn’t have the solidity of some of the higher tier classical guitars, at just ~$219 it is definitely affordable, which can make all the difference to someone who is looking to learn classical guitar but is not ready to spend a fortune on a higher quality instrument.
The Dean Espana has a lovely mosaic rosette around the soundhole which gives it a sophisticated flare, but it seems to be a guitar that is geared toward fingerstyle playing and does not take well to picking of any kind. In fact, the tone gets rather mushy when a pick is used. This should not be a problem if you are looking to play straight classical. However, if you are looking to use this guitar for multiple purposes or styles of playing, you may be disappointed.
If you are looking for a straight-up classical guitar, however, then you have definitely come to the right place, and may want to consider protecting your purchase with a Musician’s Gear Deluxe Classical Guitar Case.
You can compare the Dean Espana to the
Yamaha CG122MC Cedar Top Classical Guitar
. For the same price as the Dean Espana Solid Top Classical Guitar you not only get a tighter sound, you also get a bit more flexibility, for the Yamaha, while not top of the line, does stand up to pick style playing much better.
