Gibson Acoustic Guitars: 50th Anniversary 1960 Hummingbird

by Guitar Guru

”Top Seller with Soul”

The Gibson 50th Anniversary 1960 Hummingbird acoustic guitar is probably one of the best guitar recreations available today; hardly surprising given Gibson’s reputation of producing some of the best acoustic guitars on the market.

True class never goes out of style, and the Gibson Hummingbird is no exception to this rule. Recreated to the exact specifications of the original 1960 Hummingbird model, the Anniversary edition reproduces not only the Hummingbird’s unique look, but the well-rounded tone and the playability that made the 1960 Hummingbird such a hit with amateurs and professionals alike.

Built on a dreadnought body, the Hummingbird is broad of shoulder and deep of body, points which, combined with its having a solid Sitka spruce top and mahogany body, contribute to its rich, full sound. And while the depth and size may overwhelm younger or smaller players, those with the reach will fully appreciate how easy this guitar is to play, in spite of its being a steel string guitar.

As a rule of thumb, steel string guitars are usually harder to play, and definitely harder on the fingers. But the ease of play that the Hummingbird produces is testament to its excellent construction. While the price of ~$4,700 may come as a bit of a shock, the quality of the Gibson 50th Anniversary 1960 Hummingbird will more than make up for the cost. Today the Hummingbird is one of Gibson’s top-selling guitar models.

LOL!!! In 1960, $4700. would have been a sizeable downpayment on a two-bedroom house! Even now, it's a decent deposit on a car. I would have to question why ANYONE would opt to put so much on an acoustic guitar, particularly in view of the fact that there are, today, so many really nice instruments at less than half of what they're asking for this 'bird! Even in the <$1000. price-bracket, lovely sounding and beautiful looking solid wood guitars are available. The Hummingbird is, indeed, a quality axe, but mercy! $4700????
