Ibanez Acoustic Guitar: SGT130 Sage Series

by Guitar Guru
(play-acoustic-guitar.com)

”Classic Jumbo, a Good Guitar for Beginners “

The Ibanez SGT130 Sage Series Acoustic Guitar is another throwback to Guitar’s Golden Age when guitars were made with a little more glamour and artistry than you see in today’s models. The attention to detail with the SGT130 is obvious in its offbeat headstock and pickguard and body shape which are all emphasized in its design. The high gloss finish on this black guitar makes this instrument a true stand-out in a crowd.

Built on a Jumbo body, the SGT130 is not a small guitar. Its big curvy body is designed to give you the very best in sound and volume projection. The Jumbo shape is famous for its use in rhythm instruments and is traditionally thought to provide a deep, rich tone that will underscore any music being played.

Crafted with a spruce top and mahogany back and sides, the SGT13O has a warm tone, but one that tends to disappoint somewhat in its richness, giving instead a rather boxy impression of a well-crafted Jumbo. Unfortunately, the SGT130 also tends to fall a bit short in the way of volume and clarity. Some serious strumming is needed to produce any substantial volume, and even then it tends to produce a rather muffled bass and treble notes that get a bit twangy, even with a replacement of strings to a heavier weight.

While a neck adjustment can help to reduce the twang of the treble, this can add to the overall cost of the guitar, though it will help to bring the SGT130 into alignment with its true potential. And the price, just ~$199, is nothing to be sneezed at, but makes for a good guitar for beginners or for those who would like to try their hand at playing a jumbo without paying a small fortune for one.
