Yamaha Acoustic Guitars: FG730S

by Guitar Guru
(play-acoustic-guitar.com)

“Solid Choice for the Beginning Guitarist”

The Yamaha FG730S Solid Top Acoustic Guitar is an awesome blend of quality craftsmanship and excellent tonal projection that combine to produce a guitar that is a step above the rest in its price range. It makes an excellent choice of guitars for the beginning guitarist in that it sounds lovely but doesn’t cost a fortune.

At just ~$299, the FG730S is an incredible value. Made with a solid Sitka spruce top and rosewood back and sides, this affordably priced acoustic guitar has a surprisingly clear tone and projection that one would expect from a much more expensive guitar. Part of this clarity of tone and depth of projection come from the bracing, which is light and flexible and ensures that the spruce top has room to resonate properly.

While the tone is clear and bright, it tends to become a bit muddled when handled too aggressively and too heavy of picking or strumming with a pick will cause it to lose its tune fairly easily. If handled moderately, however, it holds its tune for a reasonable amount of time. It seems made specifically for fingerstyle playing, however, and holds up very well for the guitarist who primarily leans to this style.

As to aesthetics, the FG730S is a rather simple instrument; not particularly flashy in style, but with clean lines that make it very pleasing to look at.

Billed as a “basic” guitar, the FG730S may not have the bells and whistles and glamour of more expensive models, but it has it where it counts. A pity, however, that it doesn’t have buttons or hooks for a strap, which means you are pretty much limited as to the positions in which you can play this until you have that particular oversight corrected.

All in all, however, it is a good acoustic guitar for beginners that will encourage practice and play without having to worry about ruining a high-priced instrument.
