How do you construct an E7 guitar chord, or any 7th chord? Guitar chord theory says to start with any type of triad (major, minor, dim, aug), and you have three notes. The root, the 3rd, and the 5th. If we go one step further and add an interval of a 7th from the root, we will have a 7th chord.

Your basic E chord consists of E, G#, and B. If you add a minor seventh to an E (the minor seventh of E is D), you have an E7 chord. The seventh chord follows this pattern: 1-3-5-m7.
