Mahalo Ukulele: U-320P Deluxe Pineapple Soprano
by Guitar Guru
”Ukulele Made to Have Fun in the Sun”
There are some instruments, like the Mahalo U-320P, that you just know are designed specifically with fun in mind. Just look at the shape! Be honest, have you ever seen anything sillier than a pineapple shaped ukulele?
It doesn’t sound silly though. In fact the tone of a pineapple shaped uke lends a certain air of authenticity to the instrument for one simple reason; the original ukuleles (or rather the instruments that the Hawaiian Islanders had before the Europeans arrived) were made out of gourds. It wasn’t until the Europeans arrived with their hourglass shaped guitars, that the ukulele began morphing into the classic shape that we see today.
This classic little number is made out of arched mahogany and has a rosewood bridge and fingerboard. While it is not the best of quality either in regards to construction or materials (the edges can be a bit rough and the instrument is made out of mahogany laminate) the price of ~$52 is decidedly affordable.
In fact, while this particular instrument tends to lose its tune fairly quickly, it does not have the tininess that is associated with lower quality instruments in this price range. In fact, when it is in tune it has a rather solid, woody tone that puts you in mind of palm trees and- well, pineapples!
If you are looking for a pineapple-shaped guitar that holds a better tune (or holds its tune for longer) then you may want to consider upgrading to the
Luna Guitars Tattoo Pineapple Soprano Ukulele
for ~$89. Not only does the Luna have a better overall tone, it also has cool tattoo etching that gives it an even more authentic island feel. However, if you are looking for classic styling and affordability, then the Mahalo U-320P Deluxe Pineapple Sorprano Ukulele may be just what you need.
