Takamine Guitars: Jasmine S35

“Cheap. Spend More to Get More.”

The Jasmine S35 Acoustic Guitar by Takamine is perhaps one of the best quality acoustic guitars for under $120. In fact, Takamine has a reputation as one the best producers of the highest-quality, most inexpensive acoustic guitars on the market.

The Jasmine S35 has a number of features that recommend it to both guitarists who are just starting out, and those who have been playing for some time. The S35’s primary feature is price, which at just under $120, makes it a tempting choice for those guitarists who are on a budget. But it also has a number of other features to recommend it, such as its spruce top, nato back and sides, full body binding, chrome tuners and a satin finish which enhances its resonance.

While experienced players may find it an inexpensive choice for a decent quality working guitar, one thing to keep in mind is that the S35’s top is not a solid spruce top but rather a laminated spruce top. This means that the tone of the guitar is not as true as that of a guitar with a solid spruce top. In addition, its combination of features makes for an instrument whose action is slightly too high, though this can be tempered with some adjusting and the right choice of strings. Though the Jasmine S35 is inexpensive, spend an extra $100 and purchase the
Jasmine Takamine NEX Cutaway S34CFM
or the
Jasmine Takamine S35Q
with a solid spruce top for the student just learning the acoustic guitar.

Takamine Jasmine S35 NEW
by: Brenton

I just purchased my Takamine Jasmine S35 from a company in Virginia off of Ebay. I thought I was getting a great deal. It was a Brand New TAKAMINE Acoustic! And for only $100. Yeah, I know, they ripped me off for @ $20+. I should have done more Price research, before thinking I was 'getting the deal of the decade'. However, I am in financial ruin, so $100 was a good deal for me. I did not know that it had a laminated spruce top. That really does suck! The sound is really nice for a cheapo guitar, but the action (or, the height of the strings from the fretboard) is WAYYYYY toooooooo high. I have thought about filing the nut to lower the strings, but I'm not sure I wouldn't break my guitar.
Overall, I give my experience with the Takamine Jasmine S35 a 4 stars out of 10. It's decent quality, sounds great, and is inexpensive.
Here's a side-note though: The tuners tend to 'pop' the strings when tuning. They don't evenly and gracefully tune the strings, it's more like they tug them into tune. So, I'm holding my breath and hoping she lasts at least another month.

Beginners on Cheap Acoustic Guitars
by: Elston Graubart‏

For a beginner, a solid top is much more of an inspiration than a cheap laminate top guitar. Furthermore, if the beginner guitar student DOES lose interest, a solid top will retain more of its value than a laminate. A used laminate guitar is worth less than the cost of the newspaper ad to sell it. A solid-top guitar in decent condition can always be 'traded up'.
