”Affordable Solid Top Beginner Guitar”The Yamaha FG700S Folk Acoustic Guitar is a decent quality beginners acoustic guitar at a surprisingly affordable price.
Solid top guitars are far and away the best choice for a beginning guitarist. The sound, tone and sustain of a solid-top guitar beats a laminate top guitar hands down, and the FG700S is no exception.
With a
solid Sitka spruce top and Nato back and sides, the FG700S is an exceptional looking guitar. But its good looks are not the only thing to recommend it; it also has a honey-sweet, woody tone that just keeps getting better the longer you play it. Its folk shape, smaller with more distinct curves as compared to a dreadnought, make it easy for most any-sized guitarist to play. Furthermore, this folk style generates a more balanced sound compared to the typical “boomy” sound of a dreadnought.
While the saddle and bridge pins are made of cheap plastic, you can replace them with sturdier bone ones which will significantly improve its already rounded tone; smoothing off edges you weren’t even aware were there. Nothing, however, will save the tone of the guitar if you get too aggressive with your strumming, however; especially if you are flatpicking. For fingerpickers, however, this guitar is a match made in affordability heaven.
On the down side, the FG700S does not have a second hook for a guitar strap. You can have one put in of course, but it is still strange that they do not include it on a guitar that like this that is just begging to be played. And at just ~$199, you’ll be smiling every time you play it.
